Sayings

Post by charliechops » Mon Dec 27, 2004 9:38 pm

SAYINGS......Things people used to say that you don't hear very often anymore, (unless you happen to be in the post office queue on pension day). Like. "Ooooh it makes my blood boil!" Things your parents or grandparents used to say that sound outdated or just plain daft. For example, "If you don't go to bed and get to sleep the bogeyman will come and get you," and you'd lay awake all night worrying about it. "Gordon Bennet!" (Who was he?) "Look at your face!" "You'll have someone's eye out!"...........The list goes on.

I realised I was getting old when I actually used the phrase "you could have someone's eye out".

Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_39 I said, "you nearly had that barman's eye out!" this very evening.

I saw Basil on telly, if not Mastermind..... :D

Nutty as a fruitcake seems to be heard a lot less often these days. Queer as a fifteen-bob note, too, but that's probably due to decimalisation as much as people turning into PC mice.
Sworn, b'loody!

Bent as a nine-bob note is still used round here. (Not very PC I know)

Strangely enough at our work's Christmas party, we were talking about someone we believed was 'Fur coat and no knickers...'

My gran (and my mam occasionally) would say to me and my sister, when we were pulling faces at each other............
"If the wind changes you're face will stay that shape" Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_40
I still use it when my daughter has a sulky face......... and she's 20

'When I were a lad...'

Never did get that one.

The headmistress in the Infants used to say, "woe betide anyone who [misbehaves in whatever way]," in a most threatening way. I never used to know what she meant.

Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_49 Don't seem to know much, me, like. And I'll have no derogatory answers to that, please! Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_46
