Football results via the teleprinter

Like Superman on the radio (great for the imagination), likewise Journey Into Space, or the TeleGoons. Showing my age now!!

Football results via the teleprinter

Post by No Mere Nosebleed » Thu May 17, 2007 10:50 am

This goes back a few years to the days of Telex (remember Telex?). You'd see an on-screen shot of the teleprinter, with all the football results coming in slowly, oh so slowly, as they were sent by Telex.

It could be absolute agony. You'd see your team's name come up, then the teleprinter would stutter for a while, making lots of mechanical sound with nothing actually appearing on the screen, until eventually you got thescore. This was particularly bad when your team was playing away - you'd get, e.g, Aston Villa 3, My team....splutter, grind, .... and you'd be having kittens thinking they'd lost again, then up would come, after an eternity, 4. Instant ecstasy.

The eventual reading of the results had its own charm. Len Martin was the guy who had this job for years on the BBC. He did the job in his own unique way, with rising and falling intonations of voice depending on the nature of the result. No-one could do it like Len, and it used to worry me sick wondering what would happen when he finally retired or dropped dead. I actually wrote to the BBC suggesting that they make recordings of Len's voice, naming all the teams and possible permutations of results. They would then be able to ensure continuity when Len moved on. For some reason, I never got a reply....

I think they should bring it back.

It was great to watch it in the bottom left corner of the screen, just sitting there bobbing it's head, waiting for a result to come in... and then off it would go like a demented headbanger, dancing across the screen, brilliant.

Bring it back, I say. :)

The latest score would appear at the bottom, but now it appears at the top. It's most confusing.

Ah, I see (said the blind man to the deaf dog)

I can't say I've noticed which way it goes these days, but I do remember each new result did appear at the bottom in the old days

That's because the old one printed physically onto a roll of paper that turned mechanically. Moving it the other way would have smudged the ink.

But surely they could have left it like that with the computer version, couldn't they?
