Listen With Mother

Like Superman on the radio (great for the imagination), likewise Journey Into Space, or the TeleGoons. Showing my age now!!

Listen With Mother

Post by Kool » Thu Aug 24, 2006 1:44 pm

"Are you sitting comfortably?...Then I'll begin!"

Anyone remember "Listen With Mother"? The programme was first broadcast in 1950 and the last one went out in 1982, and it was on weekdays from 1.45 - 2pm. I remember whenever I stayed with my grandparents, they'd put me in the bedroom with a couple of old "Rupert Bear" annuals and an old transistor radio whilst they had their post-lunch snooze.

I had to listen to this at nursery in the early '70s. I think it was just a way to get us to stop running around for 15mins. I can't remember any of the programmes though.

I don't remember any of the stories - except they were often read by one Daphne Oxenford. But I think I listened to it most days until I went to school and most days in the school holidays long after that...

Here's the theme-tune - although it's a bit electronic rather than the original piano version:

I play in a string quartet and we play this tune sometimes at wedding receptions etc. Whenever we do you hear a Chinese whisper effect of "Listen With Mother" going around the guests.

Which instrument do you play, Drumlady? I play the piano, so I've played this piece, too. (It's the "Berceuse" from Faure's "Dolly Suite", if anyone's curious!)

I can play the Violin (well 30 years ago I could). I always wanted to learn the piano, but the headmaster's dream was to have a full school orchestra, and we already had a piano player, so it was the stringed section for me.

Bet I could still do it if someone gave me a violin.

I mean, it's not very nice to hear someone talking about their 'ablutions'.
You could have said you kept it playing while you were pottering about the house.

I mean, some things are just best kept quiet.

I don't remember ever watching Listen with Mother. Or listening to Watch with Mother. Or something. I must be too young
