I only remember the "original" as well. As you say, what actually constitiues "jam" is a matter for debate.
It was red its true. and it did have a sort of jammy consistency, but it never had much taste.
Still buy them occasionally when I get the urge..............

You can still buy similar cakes in my local Sainsburys - although not by Lyons. Still the same soft, fluffy sponge, still the same soft icing that would strip the enamel off your teeth.
Loverly!

According to several websites they can live for a year without eating although 2-3 months is usual. I dont think concrete would be a suitable food for anything as it contains some potentially corrosive ingredients when dissolved. I read that their "favourite" foods are meat, any starchy foods and ca...

Many years ago I moved into an old house that had been occupied by an elderly lady for many years. In the first few days I wondered what the hell they were - never having seen them before. I did the house up from top to bottom and they eventually dissappeared to a point where you only saw them once ...

Of course the main reason why Wagon Wheels - and many other similar confections arent as nice as they used to be is that they are now covered in "Milk chocolate FLAVOUR coating" and not real milk chocolate as they were when I was a sprog. Check out the list of ingredients and see for yourself. And t...

Yes.................well I do remember them. They never really sold well for many reasons. First was cost. I seem to recall they were in the ?35 area - which made them expensive for the early 1960's. More than the average weeks pay packet. Probably equivalent to about ?500 nowadays. Second was weigh...
