Most cosmetics do have an indication of when to use.
Sometimes you will see a little tub with an open lid. Beside it it will tell you how long once open.

BB/UB dates are simply ultra-conservative dates set by food manufacturers to avoid the hyper-litigious society we live in from sueing them. If it looks OK, smells OK, and tastes OK, then it is OK :P Use by dates are calculated by doing shelf life tests on the products and a product CAN/DOES change ...
